STMicroelectronics introduces STM32WBA5 series microcontrollers

     ST announced the launch of the new STM32WBA5 series of microcontrollers, which not only inherits the STM32 family's tradition of performance, energy efficiency and ease of use, but also significantly improves wireless connectivity and security to meet the growing demand for Internet of Things devices.

     The STM32WBA5 series microcontrollers have a built-in Arm Cortex-M33 core running at up to 100MHz, with a wealth of peripheral interfaces and up to 1MB of flash memory and 128kB of static RAM (SRAM). In addition, the family supports the Arm TrustZone security isolation architecture, which provides hardware-level security for iot devices.

     In terms of wireless connectivity, the STM32WBA5 series integrates a variety of network protocols such as Bluetooth 5.4 Low Power (BLE), Zigbee, Thread and Matter to achieve concurrent connectivity with various iot devices. At the same time, the built-in 2.4GHz radio module provides RF output power of up to +10dBm, ensuring the reliability of long-distance communication.

     Security is one of the core considerations for iot devices. The STM32WBA5 series of microcontrollers also perform well in this regard. It is certified to iot Platform Security Assessment Standard (SESIP) Level 3, which is a strong proof that it has been built with security in mind. At the same time, the series also supports the PSA security certification program, which improves the network protection capability. Security software solutions based on Trusted Firmware for Arm Cortex-M (TF-M) also provide devices with a full range of protection, from secure startup and secure firmware updates to runtime credentials.

     It is worth mentioning that the low-power design of the STM32WBA5 series microcontrollers is also excellent. It uses ST's low-power technology and a flexible quick-wake power-saving mode that can reduce power consumption by up to 90%, thereby extending the overall battery life of iot devices.

     At present, the STM32WBA5 series microcontrollers have attracted the attention of many customers. Abeeway plans to use it in next-generation multimodal asset tracking hardware, while Performance Design Products (PDP) is using it in a new, ground-breaking game controller. In addition, P4Q Electronics already uses the STM32WBA52 microcontroller in its Qassay® side-flow reader to enable fast and accurate side-flow analysis tests.

     Pricing for the STM32WBA5 series of microcontrollers has not yet been announced, but the STM32WBA54 and STM32WBA55 are scheduled for full release on March 12, ST said. At the same time, the company also confirmed that it will launch a ready-to-use module containing power and antenna balancing circuits in June to provide developers with a more convenient development experience.
