Power conversion chips that improve energy efficiency and save space for consumer electronics and industrial applications

     VIPerGaN100 and VIPerGaN65 are newly added to the series of high-voltage wide-band gap power conversion chips of STMicroelectronics, which are suitable for single-switch tube quasi-resonant (QR) flyback power converters with maximum power of 100W and 65W. Targeted applications for this compact, highly integrated product design include USB-PD chargers, appliances, smart building controllers, lighting, air conditioning, smart meters and other switching power supplies (SMPS) for industrial applications.

     Each device incorporates a pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller and a 650V enhanced GaN power transistor, enabling secondary side voltage regulation with a standard optical coupler. The compact 5mm x 6mm QFN package, combined with high integration, ensures that the transistors have very excellent power density and save bill of Materials (BoM) costs. Wide-gap transistor technology can improve energy efficiency and simplify thermal management design.

     These converter chips employ advanced power management technology with very low static current and standby power consumption of less than 30mW in adaptive burst mode. Each product features a quasi-resonant mode with dynamic blanking time and valley synchronization to reduce switching losses and maximize energy efficiency across all input lines and load conditions. These energy efficiency advantages help target applications reduce energy consumption and meet the energy saving and net zero carbon emission goals of the global ecodesign Code.

     The chip also incorporates safety protection and reliability features, such as output overvoltage protection, current detection, input overvoltage protection, power-on protection, power-off protection, and thermal shut-off, as well as frequency jitter technology for EMI suppression, where input voltage feedforward compensation minimizes peak power variation.
