STMicroelectronics introduces 3-axis automotive gyroscope

     STMicroelectronics introduces the first 3-axis digital output gyroscope on the market that complies with the automotive integrated Circuit standard (AEC-Q100). St's latest angular speed sensors are designed to improve the accuracy and stability of automotive equipment, including in-dash navigators, telematics systems and road and bridge toll systems.

     STMicroelectronics' automotion-grade gyroscopes provide accurate measurement results that significantly improve dead reckoning and/or map  matching for automotive navigation and telematics systems. In indoor and built-up urban areas where GSP satellite signals are poor, dead reckoning systems can compensate for signal loss and replace satellites in detecting the movement and height of objects. The precise measurement data of the gyroscope can also improve the accuracy of map matching. Map matching is the process of describing the movement trajectory of the user's location observed by satellites or sensors on a digital map of the highway network. Map matching is used in various navigation and positioning systems, including traffic flow analysis and vehicle driving direction.

     Measuring motion along three orthogonal axes with a single detection structure is ST's unique gyroscope design concept, enabling new dead estimation and map matching capabilities that completely resolve signal interference between the three axes, resulting in significantly improved measurement accuracy and excellent output stability over a long time and wide temperature range. St's A3G4250D measures angular rates up to +/-250dps (degrees per second). The on-chip interface of the gyroscope converts the angular rate data into a 16-bit stream, which is securely and reliably transmitted to a dedicated microcontroller via standard SPI or I2C communication protocols. The new product offers two output pins (interrupt and data preparation) and four user-selectable output data rates.

     The 3V single-power sensor integrates two power-saving modes, off and deep sleep, and integrates a smart power management function with the FIF (first-in, first-out) memory module. The A3G4250D has a built-in 8-bit temperature sensor with an extended operating range of -40 to 85°C. This product is highly resistant to electromagnetic interference and can withstand impacts of up to 10,000g.
