Renesas Electronics introduces low-power P-channel MOSFETs

     Renesas Electronics Corporation announced the launch of a family of five low-power P-channel power metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). Includes µPA2812T1L optimized for uses such as charge control switches for lithium-ion (Li-ion) secondary batteries in notebook computers and power management switches for power conversion with AC adapters.

     In recent years, the demand for notebook batteries has increased in terms of low power consumption in the overall system, longer running time when using battery power, and smaller and thinner form factor. Power MOSFETs are used for control switches in lithium-ion secondary batteries, as well as power management switches for AC adapter power conversion, which must be able to carry the high current required to operate the entire system, so the need to reduce the operating resistance (on-resistance) needs to reduce the overall power consumption of the system. At the same time, as laptop bodies are becoming thinner and more compact, there is an increasing demand for smaller, thinner lithium-ion battery packs.

     To meet these needs, Renesas Electronics has developed a new manufacturing process that uses extremely fine process technology relative to other innovations to reduce the on-resistance by half when faced with similar applications, in the same effective range, compared to the previous process technology for manufacturing MOSFETs. Five new products, including µPA2812T1L, offer low on-resistance in a small package.
