Texas Instruments introduces adjustable three-pole voltage regulator

The TL317 is an adjustable three-pole voltage regulator capable of delivering 100 mA in the 1.25V to 32V output voltage range. It is very easy to use and only requires two external resistors to set the output voltage. The regulator provides complete overload protection and is only available in integrated circuits. Current limiting and thermal overload protection are included on the chip.

All overload protection circuits remain fully functional even if the adjustment is turned off. Typically, a capacitor is not required unless the device is located away from the input filter capacitor, in which case an input bypass is required. Optional output capacitance can be increased to improve transient response. Adjustments can be bypassed to achieve very high ripple suppression.

In addition to replacing fixed regulators, the TL317 regulator is useful in a wide variety of other applications. Since the regulator is floating, only the input-output differential pressure can be seen, as long as it does not exceed the maximum input-output differential pressure, you can adjust the power supply of several hundred volts.

Its main application is a programmable output regulator, but by connecting a fixed resistor between the regulator and the output, the device can be used as a precision current regulator. The electronic shutdown power supply can be adjusted to the ground by clamping and programmed to output to 1.25V, where most loads generate very little current
